The short answer

Stay in Sigiriya itself, within 3 km of the rock, if the rock and Pidurangala are the reason you're coming. You'll be at the gate at 7:00 before the buses, and back for a nap when the midday heat hits.

Stay in Dambulla only if you arrive late by bus or want shops and ATMs on the doorstep. Stay in Habarana if your trip is mostly safaris and Polonnaruwa, and Sigiriya is a half day side trip.

Most of the region's sights sit within an hour of each other, so you don't need to move around: pick one base and do day trips.

How many nights do you need in Sigiriya?

  • 1 night: possible, but you'll rush. Climb the rock in the afternoon and Pidurangala at sunrise, then leave.
  • 2 nights: what we suggest for most people. One morning for the rock, one for Pidurangala, an afternoon safari, and the cave temple on your way out.
  • 3 nights: add a day trip to Polonnaruwa's ruins by bike, or a village tour and cooking class, with time to do nothing on the verandah.

There's a day by day plan in our Sigiriya itinerary.

What to check before you book anywhere

  • Air conditioning. Sigiriya is in the dry zone and stays hot at night for much of the year. A fan alone is fine for some people, but not in March to September.
  • Mosquito screens or nets, especially after the rains in October to January.
  • An early breakfast. If you're at the rock for 7:00, ask whether they'll pack breakfast or serve it at 6:00.
  • Distance, honestly measured. "Near Sigiriya" on a booking site can mean 15 km away on the main road. Check the map pin.
  • Safari pick ups. A place that books jeeps directly saves you haggling at the park gate.
  • Roads after dark. Wild elephants cross the roads around Sigiriya in the evening. If you're staying outside the village, don't plan on walking back to dinner.
Budget guide: guesthouses start around US$20 to 30 a night, private guest houses and boutique stays around US$40 to 120, and the big resorts around US$150+. Prices go up from December to April.

Where SIGEYRA fits, and who it isn't for

We're a two room guest house in Sigiriya village, 3 km from the rock. Each room has A/C, a mini refrigerator and its own bathroom, and you can book one room or the whole guest house.

Good for

  • Couples who want a quiet room close to the rock
  • Two couples or a family taking the whole guest house
  • People who'd rather talk to the owner than a front desk

Look elsewhere if

  • You want a pool (confirm)
  • You want a restaurant and bar on site
  • You need room for more than 4

Where to stay in Sigiriya: quick questions

Is it better to stay in Sigiriya or Dambulla?

Sigiriya, for most visitors. It's quieter and you're minutes from both rocks. Dambulla is a busy market town about 30 minutes away. It's handy for buses and the cave temple, but you'll spend more time on the road.

Habarana or Sigiriya for a safari?

Habarana is a little closer to Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu, but only by 10 to 20 minutes. Afternoon safaris start around 2:30 pm, so staying in Sigiriya works fine and you get the rock on your doorstep.

Can you walk to Sigiriya Rock?

From the village, yes: it's a flat walk along the moat, best done early in the day. From Kimbissa or the main road, take a tuk tuk.

Is Sigiriya safe at night?

Yes, it's a sleepy, friendly village. The main thing to watch out for is wild elephants on the roads after dark, so take a tuk tuk at night rather than walking or cycling unlit roads.

Do I need to book ahead?

From December to April, and in August, the better small places fill up, so book a few weeks ahead. The rest of the year you can usually find a room a few days out.
