The short answer

January to March is the most comfortable time to visit: dry, green, and not yet too hot. June to September is also dry, and it's the time for the big elephant Gathering at Minneriya. October to December is the rainy season, but it's rarely a washout.

Sigiriya is in Sri Lanka's dry zone, so it follows a different pattern from the beaches in the south west. When it's pouring in Galle in June, it's usually sunny here.

Pick your month

Typical patterns, not a forecast. Temperatures are average daytime highs. The weather shifts a few weeks either way most years.

The four seasons, roughly

January to March: the sweet spot

The north east monsoon has passed and the paddy fields are green. Mornings are fresh, and the afternoons are warm but bearable. It's the busiest and most expensive time, so book a few weeks ahead, especially in February.

April to May: hot, with storms

The hottest stretch of the year. Climb at dawn and stay in the shade from 11 to 3. April often brings short afternoon thunderstorms between the monsoons. Mid April is the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when villages hold games and visit family. May's full moon is Vesak, when lanterns go up everywhere.

June to September: dry, breezy and elephant season

While the south west monsoon soaks the coast, Sigiriya stays dry with a steady wind. As Minneriya's reservoir shrinks, the elephants gather, peaking around August and September. July and August are busy with European summer holidays. Prices are lower in June.

October to December: the rains

The inter monsoon and north east monsoon rains arrive, usually as heavy afternoon or evening downpours with clear mornings. The rocks can be slippery and some safari tracks get muddy, but everything turns green, it's cooler, and it's quiet until the Christmas rush.

Visiting in the rainy season

  • Do the climbs in the morning. Rain usually comes after lunch, so 7:00 on Sigiriya is often still clear.
  • Shoes with grip matter more: the rock steps and Pidurangala's boulders get slippery.
  • Keep a flexible day. If one morning is grey, swap the climb and the cooking class around.
  • Expect better prices and quieter sites.

For the climbs themselves, see Sigiriya Rock and Pidurangala. For where the elephants are each month, see the safari guide.

Best time to visit: quick questions

What is the best month to visit Sigiriya?

February, for most people: it's dry, green and not too hot. If elephants are high on your list, choose August or September instead.

Is it worth visiting Sigiriya in the monsoon?

Yes. Rain in Sigiriya usually comes in the afternoon, so you can still climb in the morning. It's quieter, cheaper and very green.

When is Sigiriya least crowded?

May, June, October and November. On any day, the first hour after opening (7:00 to 8:00) is the quietest.

How hot does it get?

Daytime highs are about 29 to 31°C in December and January, and 33 to 34°C from March to May. Nights rarely drop below about 21°C, which is why air conditioning helps.
