Opening hours & the best time to climb
The site is open every day, about 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. The ticket counter stops selling around 5:00 pm. You can't climb Sigiriya for sunrise. For that, go to Pidurangala.
- Best: be at the gate at 7:00. It's cooler and quieter, and you reach the frescoes before the tour buses arrive at around 9:00.
- Second best: start around 3:00 pm. The light is softer and the crowds thinner, but leave time for the climb before closing.
- Avoid 10 am to 2 pm. The rock face reflects the heat and the queue on the last staircase can be long.
- Weekends and Poya (full moon) days bring many local visitors. Go on a weekday if you can.
For the weather month by month, see the best time to visit Sigiriya.
The climb, stop by stop
It's about 1,200 steps to a summit roughly 180 m above the plain. It's steady rather than difficult: most people take 1 to 2 hours up and down, and 2 to 3 hours with the gardens and museum. Tap a stop.
What to bring & wear
- Water: at least a litre each. There's little shade above the Lion's Paws.
- Shoes with grip: trainers or sandals with straps. The rock steps get slippery after rain.
- Hat and sun cream, and some small notes for a cold drink at the bottom.
- Clothes: there's no strict dress code, but covering shoulders is respectful, and you'll need to if you visit the Dambulla temple the same day.
- No drones without a permit, and no photos of the frescoes.
Is it hard? If you can walk up 60 floors of stairs slowly, with rests, you can do it. The last staircase from the Lion's Paws is a steep metal stairway fixed to the rock face, so it can feel exposed if you're scared of heights. Children manage it well. Anyone with knee or heart problems can stop at the Lion's Paws and still enjoy the best of the site.
Is Sigiriya worth it? Or should you do Pidurangala?
US$35 is a lot by Sri Lankan standards, and many travellers ask this. Our honest answer: do both if you have two mornings. If you only have one, pick by what you want:
Sigiriya Rock
- A 1,500 year old palace on top, plus the frescoes, Mirror Wall and Lion's Paws
- UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Well built steps, all the way up
- Opens at 7:00, so no sunrise
Pidurangala Rock
- The famous view of Sigiriya
- The best sunrise in the area
- Much cheaper, and quieter
- The last 10 minutes are a boulder scramble
Getting to the rock from SIGEYRA
The ticket office is 3 km from the guest house: about 6 minutes by tuk tuk (around LKR 500), or a 25 minute walk along the moat in the early cool. We'll book you a tuk tuk the night before, and pack breakfast to take with you if you leave before ours is served.
